Musk Talks Optional Work as Tesla Ships Robotaxis and Keeps Optimus Out of Sight
Elon Musk says AI and robots will make work optional. As of 2 September the robots Tesla has put in public are cars without drivers, now all over Austin, and the humanoid meant to do the work has not been shown.
On 2 July Elon Musk replied to a thread on X with two sentences: AI and robots will be able to do everything, resulting in universal high income, and work will be optional. He gave no year. Six weeks later he said that one day Optimus and Grok would provide medical care to everyone on Earth. He gave no year for that either. Between those posts his company started building a factory line for a robot it has not shown in public, and put enough driverless cars on Austin's streets that, as of the first days of September, they are hard to miss.
For a contractor the claims matter because the labor they describe is the labor on a job site. Musk's own example, in an interview earlier this year, was a factory: Grok organising Optimus robots to build the floor that builds whatever you want. The question this article asks is narrow. What has Tesla put in front of the public, what has it said about when the rest arrives, and how do those dates compare with the company's earlier ones?
The robot on the road has no hands
Tesla's robotaxi is the one autonomous machine the company operates in public, and the picture changed in the last two weeks of August. On 26 August the company's Robotaxi account said the service now runs from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week, that the unsupervised fleet is a lot bigger, and that new routing means shorter waits. On 29 August it announced a larger service area in Dallas. Gold Cybercabs, the two-seat car built without a steering wheel, were filmed on Austin streets through the same week: on Lamar, Guadalupe, Riverside, Airport Boulevard, and in north Austin during the evening rush, by residents who post every sighting. Tesla invited riders to a Cybercab launch event in Austin on 3 September. This article is written the day before it.

The count behind the videos is the part nobody outside Tesla has. The company does not publish fleet numbers. Its first filing under the Texas autonomous-vehicle law, in early June, listed 42 robotaxis across Austin, Dallas, and Houston against 577 for Waymo, and a crowdsourced tracker put the active unsupervised Austin fleet near 20. By 20 August the same tracker's creator told The Verge that every one of 170 monitored Austin rides over two weeks had run without a monitor, across 54 different cars, with about 30 more driverless in Dallas and Houston. Since then the company says the fleet is a lot bigger and has not said by how much. One widely shared post claims about a thousand Cybercabs parked around Austin and other cities. It cites no source, and this magazine could not confirm it. What can be confirmed is that the service runs sixteen hours a day, unsupervised, in seven metros, with a purpose-built car about to join it.
Those are real machines doing real work on public roads, and this magazine does not discount them. They are also a specific kind of robot. A Model Y with nobody in it can drive to the curb outside a job site. It cannot open the gate, climb the three steps to the trailer, carry a box of anchors up a ladder, or do anything at all in a building designed around a person's hands and legs. Every environment a contractor works in was built for a body. The robotaxi is the version of Tesla's autonomy that works because the road was built for the car.

Optimus is the machine Musk's economic claims rest on, and the one the public has seen least. At the April earnings call, according to a detailed recap, Musk said the third-generation robot was fully functional but that Tesla was holding back the reveal to keep competitors from copying it, with an unveiling closer to production in late July or August. In July Business Insider reported that Tesla still had not revealed what the next version looks like, and that the company had released photographs of the Fremont production line instead. On 1 July Musk posted that he had walked that line, and in a second post that Optimus production would be extremely slow at first because everything was new and this was not like making a car.
Tesla's own filings are plainer than its CEO. The annual report filed in January says the company has yet to commercialize its robots and cannot predict how demand will develop, from businesses or from consumers. The July shareholder update says the Model S and X lines have been decommissioned to make room for the Optimus line, that production is planned for later this year, and that the first units will go to an internal Optimus Academy to generate training data rather than to customers. The stated design capacities are a million robots a year at Fremont and ten million at Austin. The stated date for a robot that is useful outside Tesla's own facilities is the summer of 2027.
The last public look at Optimus doing work was the We, Robot event in 2024, where the robots walked on their own and, as later reporting established, poured drinks and talked to guests under remote human control. That is the same pattern the rest of the industry follows on stage. Boston Dynamics said the Atlas it showed at CES in January was a prototype guided by a pilot. 1X sells its home robot with a scheduled mode in which a company employee steers it remotely through tasks it has not learned. A demonstration is a claim about what a robot can do with a person behind it. A deployment is a count of hours it ran without one.
What the deployed humanoids have logged
Two companies have published that count. Figure ran its second-generation robot at BMW's Spartanburg plant for eleven months, loading sheet metal on a ten-hour shift five days a week. Its own tally is about 90,000 parts, more than 1,250 hours of runtime, and a contribution to more than 30,000 X3 bodies. The successor now sorts logistics parts in the same plant. Agility says its Digit robots have run more than 65,000 hours across nine customer facilities, including a GXO warehouse in Georgia where one moved more than 100,000 totes. Agility is going public through a merger at a $2.5 billion valuation and cites more than $300 million in conditional orders for a model that lifts 50 pounds and runs 22 hours a day.

Both jobs share a shape. The robot stands in one place or walks a fixed route, picks up an object of known size and weight, and puts it somewhere known. Parts arrive in a container; totes go on a shelf. The environment was tidied for the robot before the robot arrived. That is the opposite of a job site, where nothing is where the drawing says, the floor changes weekly, and the object to be carried is whatever the foreman points at. The one humanoid a contractor has put on a site, at Tilbury Douglas in Britain this spring, walks the building to capture 360-degree imagery and progress reports. The firm expects it to save about 40 hours of administrative time a month. It does not touch the work.
McKinsey told builders last autumn to plan for robots on sites and pointed at humanoids as an answer to the trades shortage. The robotics news of 2026 has pointed the other way: a billion dollars of funding went to companies retrofitting excavators and haul trucks, and the contractors reporting hours ran layout printers and drilling rigs. Guy Hoffman, who teaches mechanical engineering at Cornell, told Business Insider that humanoids are a very risky bet and that he does not see the product having a viable future in the near term. Agility's chief executive told investors the demand is large and rising because older workers are retiring and younger ones do not want the jobs. Both can be right about different decades.
Read the date, then read the last date
Musk's timelines have a record, and it is the reason to write them down with the day they were said. In February 2019 he told an investor podcast that Tesla's cars would be feature-complete for full self-driving that year and that by the end of 2020 a driver could sleep from the parking lot to the destination. Two years earlier he had said elements of the feature would arrive within three to six months. The first paid ride with nobody in the car came in June 2025, in one city, with a monitor, and the fully unsupervised fleet in that city passed 50 cars in August 2026. The feature shipped. It shipped six years after the date, at a scale the company's own filings put in the dozens.
The Optimus dates so far follow the same grammar. A reveal in late July or August that had not happened by the end of August. Production in the third quarter that the company described in July as planned and its CEO described as extremely slow. Usefulness outside Tesla by the summer of 2027. A million a year with no date. Universal high income with no date. None of that makes the robot a fiction. It makes the schedule a forecast from a forecaster with a known bias, which is a thing an estimator prices every week.
Log every Musk or Tesla date with the day it was said, the thing it describes, and what shipped by that day. The 2019 list is the template.
Separate the company's filings from the CEO's posts. The filing says the robot is not commercialized. The post says production is starting.
Treat a stage demonstration as a claim and a runtime figure as evidence. Ask any humanoid vendor for hours, facilities, and a customer who will take a call.
Expect the first useful robot on a site to do what the road did for the car: work inside a space arranged for it. Layout, drilling, and hauling are that space today.
Plan labor for the next five years on the trades you can hire, and treat the humanoid as an option with a date you did not set.
Work may become optional. On the evidence of what Tesla has put on a public road, the robot that makes it optional will arrive after the car did, and the car took six years longer than promised to drive around Austin without a hand on the wheel.
