The Daily Log Got Segments, Voice Notes, and a Photo Agent in August
Procore split the log on 18 August, OpenSpace added dictation and auto-location, and a superintendent posted numbers from an app he built to push photos into the record. What changed, dated, and what to ask before September.
The daily log is the one document every superintendent owes the office before they go home, and it is the field record that almost every jobsite AI product now says it can fill. In August three things changed about how that log gets written. Procore split the log into segments on 18 August. OpenSpace added voice notes and automatic location to its field app. And on 31 August a superintendent at a $100 million commercial general contractor posted the numbers from an app he built himself to push annotated photos into Procore, with compliance on the log going from about 30 percent to close to 100. None of the three is a controlled study. All three are dated, and this article lays them out in order with what each one does and does not say.
The reason the log matters more than the product names is that it is the record a claim gets settled from. A daily log with the wrong crew count or a missing weather entry is a document a lawyer reads two years later. The tools that landed in August are all aimed at the same gap: a superintendent who took forty photos and did not type a word.

What Procore changed on 18 August
Procore's August release notes carry two changes to the Daily Log tool dated 18 August. The first is segments: a project can now hold several daily logs on the same day, organized by location, phase, crew, shift, or company. Each segment can carry a location that is prepopulated on every entry made from it, and a superintendent can work in their own segment without seeing the rest of the project. The second is two new fields, company and location, on every log type except timecards, and company is not available on the photos log. Both changes feed 360 Reporting, Procore's project-level roll-up.
Neither change is an AI feature. They matter because they are the shape the Daily Log agent writes into. Procore launched its Digital Coworker packages on 23 July, and the Starter Pack of five agents includes a Daily Log agent alongside Deep Search, Submittal Review, RFI, and Contract Review. The Pro tier opens a library of 20 agents, and a capability called Procore Skills, still upcoming, is meant to let a firm teach the agents its own procedures. A log that is split by crew and location is a log an agent can fill one segment at a time, and one a reviewer can check the same way.
Procore has not published a contractor's hours saved on the Daily Log agent, and the release notes for the segments do not mention it. What the company has published is the acquisition that gives the agents their eyes: the 29 July agreement to buy DroneDeploy for about $845 million in cash, expected to close later this year. That deal is covered in this magazine's software desk. For the field, the relevant sentence in Procore's release is in the future tense: cameras, drones, and robots will regularly evaluate the site and automatically initiate responses. Regularly is not yet, and a superintendent should read it that way.
OpenSpace: dictate the note, let the app find the room
OpenSpace's release notes, updated 26 August, list two August features for its field app. AI Voice Notes lets a person log an issue by talking instead of typing. AI Autolocation pins that issue to the right spot on the floor plan without the person choosing it. Issues logged on a phone carry the images, the location, and the details with them, and updates sync both ways with Autodesk. The same month OpenSpace Track added an executive view with a downloadable task breakdown per phase, and support for the Insta360 X6, its first 360-degree camera at 8K in timelapse mode.
The voice feature has been rolling out since March, when it reached Android and iOS in all regions, and it came to the desktop app in May. The progress product it feeds is the one OpenSpace makes its largest claims about: more than 700 visible building components tracked across more than 200 scheduled tasks, with AI doing the first pass and human reviewers checking the result before it is final. A separate August write-up puts the capture rate at 25,000 square feet in ten minutes with the data viewable in about fifteen. Both figures are OpenSpace's own, and the August coverage that repeats them says so.

One superintendent's own app, and its numbers
The most specific field numbers in August came from a person, not a vendor. On 31 August Trent Von Holten posted on X that he works in commercial construction and built an app for his company's field teams. The problem he described is the one every superintendent knows: iPhone photos are large, storage balloons, the same photo gets entered twice for Procore and cloud storage, and compliance on the daily record sat near 30 percent. His app shrinks the photos, lets the person annotate and describe each one, stores them on the phone when the signal drops, and pushes them into Procore and cloud storage in one step. He says compliance is now near 100 percent, and the software is running for all field staff and project managers at a $100 million commercial GC.
He added one detail that says more about the daily log than the percentages do. A superintendent attaching raw iPhone photos to a Procore log tops out at eight to twelve of them. With the photos compressed and packaged as a PDF, the same person attaches fifty or more. The bottleneck was not the will to document. It was the file size. Every figure in the thread is self-reported by the builder of the app, he does not name the contractor or the jobs, and there is no independent check. It is included here because it is dated, it is specific, and it describes a job that is running.
Voice for the civil foreman, and one site with an engineer on it
The heavy civil side has the same feature on a different timetable. HCSS, whose HeavyJob is the daily report for a large share of US civil contractors, lists a Field Agent on its AI page: a foreman speaks the day's work and the software drafts the daily report with no typing. The page says 800 companies and 3,000 users are on HCSS AI today and that the agent itself arrives in the fall. Sergio Rodriguez of Underground Construction Co. is quoted saying work that took a few hours now takes a few seconds, without saying which work. For a civil foreman the honest reading is that the assistant is live and the voice-to-log agent is a fall date.
The one site in this reporting where field AI has a person attached to it is Suffolk's 14-gate concourse at Southwest Florida International Airport in Fort Myers, a $1.1 billion job due in December 2027. Suffolk put an AI engineer, Cory Greenwood, on the site with the title Site AI Manager, one of five on jobs in Fort Myers, Cedar Rapids, Las Vegas, New Haven, and San Luis Obispo. The field uses Suffolk describes are voice-driven schedule updates that cut a multi-day process to hours and computer vision to document site conditions. Doug Harrison, Suffolk's vice president of corporate operations, says safety metrics have halved and schedule variance improved more than 80 percent since the program started in January. Those are Suffolk's numbers, unaudited, and the story was published in July.
The clearest statement of what progress tracking changes on a schedule comes from Commodore Construction. In an OpenSpace post from June, Vito Antuofermo, a vice president there, is paraphrased saying his team used to learn about significant delays at around 50 percent completion, and with automated tracking sees productivity problems at about 10 percent. OpenSpace paraphrases him and does not name the job. The point survives the caveat: the daily record is only useful if someone reads it against the schedule while there is still time to act.
The eyes on the site, and the 3 September tariff
The record that the log gets checked against is increasingly a drone flight. Associated Builders and Contractors surveyed its members in May and published the results on 24 August. Thirty-six percent of members use drones on their jobsites. Of those, 81 percent use them for site progress monitoring and 50 percent for inspections. Ninety-seven percent fly a primary drone made by DJI, and the second most-cited make, Autel, is also Chinese. About six in ten spend between $1,000 and $10,000 on hardware, and 28 percent spend more.
The date that matters for a contractor is 3 September. On 13 August the administration imposed a 100 percent tariff on drones with a maximum takeoff weight above 55 pounds and on systems with thermal imaging, effective that day. Matt Abeles, ABC's vice president of construction technology and innovation, told Construction Dive that a ban on commonly used Chinese drones would leave contractors with minimal alternatives on cost and function. A progress-monitoring program built on a heavy or thermal DJI airframe now has a replacement cost it did not have in July, and the survey says most programs were bought on the lowest budget tier.

Where the crews are
The survey that puts the vendor announcements in proportion came out on 31 August. DEWALT's AI in the Trades survey of 2,481 US respondents, 1,730 of them skilled trade workers, found that 90 percent believe AI will be indispensable within five years and 8 percent use it in their day-to-day work. Thirty-seven percent are piloting it, 34 percent plan to, and 46 percent are looking at it for site operations and monitoring. Among the people who have tested it, about a third each cite productivity, cost, and quality control as the benefit. Eighty-seven percent want AI education built into trade schools.

Eight percent daily use is the number to hold next to every release note above. The daily log agents, the voice notes, and the drone flights are being sold into a field where fewer than one person in ten uses any AI tool on a normal day. The product that fills the log with no typing has a customer who is, for now, still typing.
The part a lawyer reads
A brief from Stites & Harbison, published 20 August, describes what happens when the log gets filled from a public chatbot. Project administration teams are pasting confidential project information into open tools without a license or consent, then issuing direction from the output. When the direction is wrong, the brief says, liability is unsettled, and the arguments between owners, general contractors, and subcontractors are already escalating. Camera-based safety and productivity monitoring that captures faces brings biometric privacy statutes into play, with notice and consent requirements. The author's line for the field is short: professional judgment cannot be delegated to a machine.
For a daily log the practical reading is this. A voice note that an agent turns into a log entry is still the superintendent's entry, and the person who taps accept owns it. A photo an app pushes into Procore is evidence with a timestamp, and the compression setting is part of the evidence. A segment assigned to a crew is a statement about who was where. None of that changes because software wrote the first draft.
What to ask before the September log
Ask the Procore administrator whether segments are on and who set the locations, because an entry made from the wrong segment now carries the wrong location by default. Ask OpenSpace, or any vendor with a voice feature, where the audio goes and how long it is kept. Ask the drone lead the takeoff weight of every airframe on the program and whether any carry thermal, then price the replacement against the 3 September tariff. Ask whoever built the in-house photo app what the compression setting is and whether the original is kept. And keep the 8 percent in mind. The field record is changing faster than the people who write it.
